Find the leak

Drip edge

Required at the eaves and rakes. A first look often skips it. That is fascia and the edge of the roof, not a stain in the house.

Drip edge is required at the eaves and the rakes. We install it. A first look often skips it.

Water at the edge is already leaving the house. Most roofs here have a foot or two of overhang, so a missing drip edge is not how you get a stain in the living room. Wind-driven rain can work under the shingles at the eave or rake. That is why the metal is there: kick that water into the gutter, keep it off the fascia and the edge of the deck.

What it actually protects

  • The fascia and soffit, so the boards do not rot.
  • The last course of shingles, so wind-driven rain does not get under.
  • The gutter hangers, so the gutter is not hanging off junk.

Skip it and an inspector can fail the edge. A first insurance look often walks the field and never gets there. That is a bid item. It is not the leak in the house.

We are a sheet-metal shop. We bend and set this piece. It is not a smear of caulk on the eave.

Just to name a few: pipe boot, a vent, a skylight, drip edge, a valley, flashing.
