Vent leaks
A roof vent is a hole we chose to put there. When the flange or the deck fails, that hole is the leak.
A roof vent is another hole we chose to put there. Off-ridge vents, box vents, and similar units sit on the field with a flange under the shingles. When that flange pulls, rusts, or the deck under it rots, water comes in at the vent. Not at “the whole roof.”
Master Flow and why the flange matters
Master Flow is GAF’s vent line. On a qualifying GAF roof we use the pieces that belong with the system so the attic can breathe and the flashing is part of the roof. Same idea as a pipe boot: leak barrier at the hole, flange in the shingle course, no tar as the only seal.
- The flange and the nails that hold it
- Soft deck around the opening
- Whether the attic is actually moving air, or vents were added without a plan
- Ridge vent versus field vents, if both are fighting each other
Attic venting is also a trade we do on purpose, not only when something leaks. A roof that cannot breathe cooks the shingles from below.
If a repair holds, that is the job. A tear-off is for when the system is finished.
Just to name a few: pipe boot, a vent, a skylight, drip edge, a valley, flashing.
